KIWI DNA EXTRACTION

Every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted meaning 1/3 of the annual food production around the world goes to landfill. Textiles waste, is also a major issue. The fashion industry is now the second most polluting industry in the world, second to the manufacturing of oil. In the UK alone, approximately 1.7 million tonnes of textile waste is produced on an annual basis, 1.2 of which is through clothing.

The main focus of my material development is how to combine the both to reduce the waste in both areas. When analysing the qualities of fabric compared to the food waste, there are 4 main areas to consider before developing a new material.

Dehydration is the process of removing water or moisture from a food product. Foods can be spoiled by food micro-organisms, bacteria, yeast, and moulds must have a sufficient amount of moisture around them to grow and cause spoilage. Reducing the moisture content of food prevents the growth of these spoilage-causing micro-organisms and slows down enzymatic reactions that take place within food. This was an important factor to stop our materials from breaking down too fast or rotting to quickly.

Fabrics for fashion are predominantly flexible and have a degree of softness that compliments the shape of the body. How was i going to create a textiles that would have a similar degree of flexibility as well as strength. My research included using natural additives to enhance these properties.

An immediate thought when using food waste as your main material, is the possible impact of mould. To be able to stop the textiles from going mouldy, i needed to experiment with natural preservatives such as ginger, salt and lemon juice. I have samples which are older than 10 months and still aren’t presenting signs of mould.

The drying process created a dry, brittle final structure, that with out food high in sugar would dry solid. Before adding other natural ingredients, i experimented with introducing the food packaging that the food waste was brought in. Melting down the recycled plastic would laminate the waste protecting from the addition of extra water. Also could create the breaks between the fibres to allow movement of the material.

Experimenting with meat waste could then allow me to distinguish whether all food waste could be used in this process or if meat, fish and dairy had to be separated from fruit and vegetables.

After 3 months of extensive material research i came up with a balance of natural ingredients for the final material. The bio safety of the textiles has been compared with a standard T-shirt. I found that there was more bacteria growth on the t-shirt than any of the other samples created. This potentially goes against expectations of the safety of the food being the core ingredient, but shows that it may be a better alternative to standard textiles.

FINAL GARMENT

Using all the research and experimentation of technique and material. I made base modular patterns for different types of garments to sample a construction method. Using sample AP-0824-FWPM-007 i made a top to show an example of how the garment would look in the fashion industry.
